Gustav Metzger used a typewriter to create works known as “typestracts,” where the arrangement of text and the spaces between letters formed abstract visual compositions. Although not the typewriter itself but rather the resulting art that was prominent, Metzger utilized the mechanical method of typing to explore “auto-destructive” art, which involves the creation of artworks with a programmed agent or process that automatically leads to their destruction over time.
